Postal Vest

The people that go outside and stay outside even during the worst of weathers are usually the ones that you need to look at when designing/looking for clothing that keeps you warm when the temperatures drop. So whilst doing some research I stumbled across the fact that US postal workers experience the biggest changes in temperatures during their working year (to be clear this was a blog post from 2006, so I can’t verify this, but it sounded cool). So with that I decided to do some digging and came across some pretty interesting stuff. The thing that stuck with me the most is that the US postal service designed their very own vest in the late 1960s that would dry quick, was lightweight and could keep you nice and toasty. So we went and found it.

The postal vest is made in the US from a nylon fabric that was first developed in the ’70s and they made that much of it, the factory that we work with may well still be using some of that old stock. The outer is a really nice navy blue with a slight green tinge to it, creating a pretty unique colour that you won’t find anywhere else. The inner is a more traditional dark navy which you don’t ever really see, but it is nice. The vest is made from a quilted fabric that contain 100% recycled polyester in between the two layers of nylon, this helps to reduce the weight, even when wet, but still keeps you nice and toasty.

The vest has a ribbed collar, brass YKK zip, two HUGE (for all that post) front pockets and a longer shoulder to give your torso maximum vest coverage. What I like most about the postal vest is that the arm hole and the waist are very slightly elasticated for a custom fit and to keep the chill out. The vests also feature a ‘drop tail’ which means that the front of the vest is shorter than the back so that when you bend over, your lower back is kept nice and warm.

The vests are designed to be worn over a sweatshirt or jumper so if you do plan to wear this only over a shirt, I would probably recommend sizing down. The vests are manufactured in New York City by Harold and his wonderful team who have been keeping postal workers warm for decades. Harold also supplies jackets to the NYPD and NYFD, so he knows a thing or two about keeping people who need clothes to work, well clothed.

If that wasn’t enough each vest comes with a TRiCKETT patch that you can have sewn onto your vest to make you look even more like a postal worker. Fear not, they don’t come attached, so if you like your clothing plain, this is how it will come. So go on and treat yourself to something lovely and maybe try and deliver some letters too.
