You are probably a lot like me, you spent so much time playing with your toys that you wanted to dress like them. However my mum and dad wouldn’t let me dye my hair green and walk around Accrington town centre in a crop top, red rubber gloves, knee high boots and my underpants like Captain Planet, so I went for Action Man instead.
I always wanted the amazing smock that Action Man wore in his mountaineering set that was first released in 1969 and then released many times in the years after. It was a garment that was simple, functional and very, very British. So like any normal person, I got my vintage Action Man and asked my man Upender to scale it up so that an Inaction Man such as my could wear Action Man’s jacket. Luckily Upender is a lovely man and he agreed and here it is.
Like always we start with the fabric and seeing as Action Man was probably going to be spending a lot of time up in the mountains you need something rugged and waterproof, so we got in touch with our mates Halley Stevensons and asked if we could use their dry wax, which they said ‘yes’ to. The fabric is surprisingly windproof too, which can only help on the cold mornings.
There is an adjustable, zipped at the chin hood which you can adjust to however you feel. At the front there is one large map pocket and two lower pockets for storing your Action Men or keys or whatever else you want to put in there. An adjustable waist to stop the wind from getting under your smock and into your body and raglan sleeves for extra mobility. The cuffs are lined storm cuffs which means that it is a normal cuff with an elasticated extension to keep the bad weather out and the warm air in.
The jacket is fully lined, including the sleeves, giving it a super luxurious feel that I am not sure that I have ever seen on a smock like this before. Just to be clear, this is a smock and as a result it goes over your head when you put it on, so there are no zips at the front, this helps to reduce water ingress and helps you to look like someone who is the greatest hero of them all. We have also upgraded the toggles on the jacket from white plastic to brown leather, it makes the jacket look a bit more premium and it probably makes Action Man jealous of you.
The jackets are put together by Upender and his wonderful team in Bolton, Lancashire – should you want to learn a little more about Upender we have a wonderful video below that shows why buying local is important.
So make yourself look like a hero, keep the wet out and enjoy a dry January in the sense that you will be warm and dry.
