I love Napoli. I love its football club, its people, its history and the way that everyday life and culture seem to be so wonderfully intertwined. So, obviously, we decided to make our own set of traditional Neapolitan playing cards. But these aren’t just any old playing cards. Oh no…
We’ve taken the traditional 40-card Neapolitan deck and commissioned our wonderful illustrator to completely redraw every single card. That’s 40 unique pieces of artwork, created exclusively for TRiCKETT, celebrating the players, personalities and history of Napoli, whilst retaining the traditional four suits of Neapolitan playing cards. Diego, naturally, takes his rightful place amongst the kings.
Even the backs have been specially illustrated, featuring our TRiCKETT logo and the magnificent Palazzo Sanfelice in Rione Sanità, one of my favourite parts of Napoli.
Each card is a little piece of artwork in its own right. You can use them for a fiercely competitive game of Scopa, frame your favourite illustrations and hang them on the wall, or simply keep the complete set as a rather lovely collectable.
To make sure they were up to the job, we sent a pack to our friend Iris in Naples, who arranged for a group of local gentlemen to give them a proper testing around the card table. Seeing our little cards, designed in Accrington, being played with in Napoli made me happier than you could possibly imagine.
Each set comes in its own beautifully designed blue box, and a contribution from every pack sold goes to the San Gennaro Foundation, giving something back to the city that inspired them. If you do want to learn how to play Scopa, I found that this was the best instructional video to get your started… but I would probably buy one pack to frame and one to play with.
