After doing a bit of research it turns out that the Scottish borders have a proud history of making boiled sweets and as a result I had to go and find the very best. I managed to find Jethart snails and Hawick balls with relative ease, but finding the elusive Moffat Toffee has been a challenge that I wasn’t expecting which involved many emails, driving up to Moffat, staying in a Travelodge in Dumfries and finding a cream liqueur where the bottle is wearing a Tam o’ shanter… but that’s a tale for another day.

Moffat Toffee is famous in the Scottish borders for its entirely unique taste. When you first taste one you think it is just like any other toffee, but keep with it and you eventually end up at the VERY sharp lemon centre that makes for a pleasant contrast. The sweets come in a little paint tin which is a real treat to open and close, plus it ensures that your toffees remain in tip-top condition.

These rather rare toffees are made in the same place and sold in the same shop as they always have been, using a secret recipe that is now in the very capable hands of Sean. So go on and get yourself a nice ‘sookie sweet.’
