I think I know what you are thinking.
“Yes, of course I need an incense burner of a sailor, smoking a pipe looking whimsically over an imaginary sea whilst my favourite incense of choice gently pours from his pipe, scenting my room and instantly calming myself and those around me.”
Then you don’t really need to read any further, just add to your basket and wait for the postie to knock at the door. However, if you still need some convincing, let me introduce you to Matroos and tell you why he is one of our most sought-after products.
In the deepest winter of 2022, I became a bit obsessed with Japanese incense as it is pretty much the best in the world for traditional scents and manufacturing techniques. I won’t bang on about Shoyeido being one of the oldest and best incense makers as that is a tale for another time, but whilst having a look through their catalogue I saw a Dutch sailor smoking a pipe and I wondered why he was there. The origins of Matroos are pretty unknown, which I like, but he is by far the best incense burner I have ever seen. Many people here at TRiCKETT HQ told me that no-one would ever buy these as they are ‘too weird’ however whenever we manage to get these back onto the shop shelves, they always seem to vanish pretty quickly.
Matroos is made using ancient Japanese pottery techniques which stretch back 1200 years. He is hand painted with his pipe being painted in a slightly glossier finish for that extra bit of excitement. The chamber that Matroos sits on has air holes underneath it for air circulation to keep the incense burning. The burner works best with Shoyeido sticks and their holder, but all other small incense sticks and cones will work just a treat too.
Each purchase of our Japanese hero comes with a sample pack of incense for you to find your favourite too. Now sit back, light your favourite incense and let’s get to it.
