Mano

The Mano or Neapolitan Red Fist is another classic charm you’ll find dotting doorways, dashboard mirrors and market stalls all across Napoli. This little hand, clenched into a fist with the thumb tucked between the fingers, is not just some old-school knick-knack. It’s an ancient symbol known as the mano fico, and it’s been protecting Neapolitans from negativity since before your nonna’s nonna was born.

Back in the day (and honestly still today), Neapolitans believed this rude little gesture had the power to keep away evil spirits, jealousy, and that all-too-familiar malocchio, the Evil Eye. The bright red colour? That’s not just for show. It’s all about life, protection, passion, power, and… a little fertility, if you’re into that sort of thing. Basically, it’s a symbol against misfortune and a high five to good vibes.
