There is a lot made of how hard people work when they don their ‘bleu de travail’, with some of the older, worn-in jackets from the 1950s showing what certain French professionals did whilst wearing the jackets. Carpenters, joiners, farm labourers, stone masons, wine makers, welders, the list goes on and on. The blue jacket was a signifier of hard work and skill that has now transcended the workshops, fields and factories and now is seen as the ultimate fashion accessory for those in the know… However, I wanted to imagine what the opposite type of person would wear, the one who didn’t like working hard and who preferred ‘la belle vie.’ So let me introduce you to the Glandeur jacket, a piece of outwear for those who prefer bread and wine to toil and strife.

The word ‘Glandeur’ basically means ‘lazy’ or ‘unproductive’, but that sort of thing really is in the eye of the beholder. With this jacket I wanted something that you could wear to look like you know how to make natural wine, when in actual fact you are only good at drinking said wine. Inside of the jacket there are two strategically placed pockets, one for wine and another for a baguette which even comes with a velcro adjustable strap to keep your baguette in place when you are moving. These have been rigorously tested here and in France so it can be assured that you will be wearing a professional garment.

On the outside there are the traditional three pockets for storage, but we have moved the pen pocket along slightly to the far right edge of the pocket so that you can have easier access to your notepad/wine list. The Bic 4 colour pen that you see in all of the images is supplied with your jacket as they are a ‘Made in France’ classic and they make you look even more like you are going to get to work. This look is inspired by my friends Nicolas and Antoine from Trésors Publics who have the best shop in France and do work very hard.

The buttons are made from a recycled polymer from the French wine industry and come in a lovely off-grey colour, don’t lick them as they don’t taste like wine, sorry. The fabric is a midweight cotton twill that is unwashed and ready for you to wear in. The more you wash and wear this jacket, the better that they become, these are just the facts. We have also gone fully to town on all the workwear construction, should you wish to actually do some work in this jacket. Reinforced seams, run and fell back seam, bar tacks, foldable sleeves, looser sleeves, see, we can do workwear! The jacket is then finished off with a TRiCKETT Glandeur label sticking out of the left chest pocket and a bigger label on the side showing a fella with a bottle of wine and looking like he will get to work when he wants.

Our jackets are made entirely in France by people that care. This garment is so synonymous with France that it is almost a crime to make them anywhere else (I am looking at you, all those brands that do such things!). French workers enjoy some of the strongest labour protections in Europe, and that includes the garment industry, think 35 hour weeks, generous holiday allowances, and strict health and safety laws. It’s all designed to keep things fair, decent, and human. That’s exactly why we choose to work with Jean Francois and his team, a manufacturer that not only makes cracking clothes but does so with proper respect for the folks stitching them together. No shady corners, no fast fashion nonsense, just solid, well-made kit with a conscience.

The fit of these jackets is much more in line with usual TRiCKETT sizing in comparison to the usual traditional French work jackets that we stock. The Glandeur is designed to fit over clothing or to be buttoned up when you are carrying your baguette and wine, so if you are going to wear it just over a t-shirt then you may want to consider sizing down. However, you are a grown up so you can make your own mind up.

So whether you want to loaf about doing very little, want to do some actual work or you just like nicely made things with a lovely story then the Glandeur is for you.
