It was a glorious September morning when I stumbled across this wonderful roaster whilst wandering around the 13th arrondissement of Marseille. I was quaffing some Ricard when the smell of coffee dragged me by the nose to go and use my very basic A-Level French to speak to Jean-Baptiste and his team all about coffee. We were welcomed in like family and shown the whole process, including the original roaster from the 1940s which still makes a satisfying clunk every time it moves around. After a bit of a chat we managed to strike a deal and get this coffee on the way… that was until I had one of the most stressful importing situations I’ve ever experienced in my life.
However, some things are worth a bit of a chase, and this coffee was absolutely one of them. After much back-and-forth, a few near misses, and some very patient conversations in French, it’s now official, we are the only people outside of Marseille to stock this magnificent coffee from Café Luciani, a family roaster that has been keeping Marseille awake and happy for generations.
If you’re after something with a bit more elegance and brightness, then Luciani’s Moka Éthiopie is the one. Made exclusively from Ethiopian Arabica beans, the birthplace of coffee no less, it’s a refined, aromatic roast with delicate floral notes and a soft, chocolatey finish. The beans are roasted lightly to preserve their natural complexity, resulting in a cup that’s smooth, balanced and beautifully fragrant. It’s the kind of coffee that pairs with a slow morning reading the paper and wearing a lovely jumper. The sort you sip and think, “Ah, yeah, this is probably why people love coffee.”
Both are available in 1 kg bags of whole beans for those who like to grind their own, or 250 g bags pre-ground especially for your Moka pot or Neapolitan flip pot, mine and Jean-Baptiste Luciani’s favourite way to brew.
It wasn’t easy to get hold of, but the best things rarely are. So if you fancy a taste of Marseille, a proper café du Sud made with skill, history and a bit of Accrington stubbornness this one if you for.
