The Accy Pipe Band Scarf is a little tribute to one of our town’s finest institutions, and to someone very important to me. My grandfather, John McGregor, was a piper, plumber, proud Scot and a member of Accrington Pipe Band. This one is for him, and for the people keeping the music going.

Made in Scotland from 100% pure new wool, it comes in Cameron of Erracht, the tartan worn by the band, with blue and green checks crossed by red and fine yellow lines. A lovely bit of colour to poke out of a winter coat, and equally at home with a navy jumper and whatever jacket you’ve left by the door.

Founded in 1885, the band grew out of the Scottish community that came to Accrington to work in its textile industries. Its founders included James McBain, gamekeeper at Dunkenhalgh Hall, and Sam Dawson, a former piper in the Scottish Rifles. They met at the “Old Vets” servicemen’s club on Abbey Street, bringing a bit of Scotland to their Lancashire home.

More than 140 years later, they’re still going. The band describes itself as the oldest continually operating civilian pipe band in the UK, and most likely the world. From local celebrations and Remembrance parades to performances in Edinburgh and New York, generations of musicians have carried Accrington’s name far beyond the town. My grandfather was part of that story, which makes supporting its next chapter rather special.

The cloth is woven at a family-owned mill in Selkirk, in the Scottish Borders. Established in 1975 by a textile designer who began making handwoven ties while studying in London, the mill went on to produce fabrics for the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Christian Dior. When its founder retired, the family behind our scarves bought the mill, keeping its looms running and its weaving skills in Scotland. It still produces their tartans today.

Pure new wool means wool that hasn’t previously been used or recycled. Warm, useful and something to bring out every autumn when you remember that leaving the house involves weather.

A contribution from the sale of every scarf will go directly to Accrington Pipe Band. They’ll decide whether to put it towards supporting the band or donate it to charity. Their band, their decision.

A little bit of Scotland, a lot of Accrington, and a nod to John McGregor.
