There are some places that are just really good at making jeans and you probably don’t know about it. France, the US and Italy are famous around the world as the originators of denim (there is some debate about all of this and I can’t be bothered getting into that). And Japan is known for perfectly replicating and improving the design, function and original manufacturing skills that were present when jeans were originally made. All of these places are rightfully celebrated around the world for making some of the finest trousers and fabrics that the world has to offer, but like all good stories, we need an up-and-coming hero that people don’t talk about enough. And place that is Indonesia.

I have been lusting after Indonesian-made jeans and fabrics for years now and it wasn’t until recently that we got the chance to have sit down with our pals NBDN from Bandung to create something super special for you. The main component of any pair of jeans is the fabric and our mates in Indonesia have come up with something just for us that is super special for our first ever collaboration. The cloth is a super slubby (this means that the fabric is an uneven which means that it breathes much better and creates completely unique fades when compared with traditional denim) texture and comes in a heavier 16oz weight. The selvedge has a pink line as that is my favourite colour and helps to indicate that this is not your everyday selvedge, oh no! The colour is a deep, dark indigo which will help to contrast which more wears and washings to create beautiful contrasts.

The cut is a trim, straight cut which suits all body shapes and has more features that I can really name here, but we will try our best. There are copper rivets throughout the jeans which is a departure from our usual jeans, but this is something that NBDN insisted on as that is their house style and to be honest, I love it. The back pockets are traditional ‘point’ pockets which help to make your backside look trimmer… I know, miracles do happen sometimes. On each back pocket outer corner there is a run-off stitch as this is how jeans were originally sewn back in the day. On the subject of sewing every stitch on this pair of jeans is chain stitched for added durability and because that is how jeans should always be made (you can see a theme developing here).

There are contrast colours and stitching throughout the jeans, done in a super subtle, beautiful way. The button holes are all done in a matching pink thread to the selvedge on the jeans and there is even a super rare pink ‘oyster shell’ stitch on the inside fly, just because we are fancy. And on the subject of fancy, every pair comes with a hand sewn patchwork ‘sashiko’ patch. Each is created by hand and uses our team colours of navy, grey and white. The fabrics used for the patches are made from previous clothing production and helps us lean into the Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi and of finding beauty in imperfections/things that would otherwise be discarded.

We have a full size chart for you to follow, so measure that against a pair of jeans that fit you well and go for the size that you like best. The fit is a trim, straight fit which is how I like my jeans to fit and they sit on trainers nicely too. All of the jeans come in a 36″ inseam and that ins’t because I now think everyone is a professional basketball player, it is so that you can take them to a local tailor to get them shortened to your exact measurements for a perfect fit. If you don’t have a local tailor we highly recommend The denim doctor and white weft for all your alteration needs.

The jeans are made in Indonesia by some of the finest craftspeople in the world. The attention to detail and construction is unlike anything that I have ever seen and I am certain that you will feel the same when you have them in your hands/on your legs. Even now I am picking them up and thinking ‘Wow these feel much better than X brand who charge £280+ for their jeans.’ So they must be good.

I have basically written an essay there, so grab a pair for yourself and enjoy them, you won’t regret it.
