I love camouflage and I really like waxed country jackets, but it is very rare that the two meet. So I decided to make something that I could wear all year round without looking too much like I am a lieutenant in an upcoming nation and not looking like someone is annoyed that you have strayed onto their land. So welcome to the Dalefort jacket, your new favourite coat.
Like always we start with the lovely fabric, this is made by Halley Stevensons in Dundee and is made from their classic wet wax. The fabric is a little greasy when you first get it, because it is covered in wax to keep the rain and wind out, but you know that. The camo is a super-exclusive Japanese pattern that you very rarely see anywhere (I am a proper camo geek) and it is a mixture of browns and creams, perfect for disappearing into the woods, undetected, when someone suggests that you go home and play board games.
The Dalefort is a perfect mix of all my favourite waxed jackets from a design point and I always found it weird that this type of jacket doesn’t exist yet. There are four flapped and brass poppered pockets to the front, this is more often seen in American hunting jackets than British ones, which adds storage and gives a much cleaner look than the usual bellows pockets you see on UK-made jackets. There is a corduroy collar with a storm flap for extra warmth should the British weather try its best to get in. Also, on the topic of storms, we have added a storm cuff at the wrist. A storm cuff is like a normal jacket cuff except it is lined in waterproof fabric and has a knitted, ribbed cuff to stay tight to your wrist and keep the elements out. At the rear there are poppered side vents should you need a little extra movement across the hips and thighs when walking.
The jacket is entirely lined and has a drip strip at the bottom of the lining so that if any water does get underneath your jacket it will drain right off rather than absorbing into the coat and making it heavier. There is one zipped pocket inside and the front of the jacket also features a two-way zip that is protected by a poppered flap.
The jackets are put together by Upender and his wonderful team in Bolton, Lancashire – should you want to learn a little more about Upender we have a wonderful video below that shows why buying local is important.
So, a bit of TRiCKETT history, what I believe is the perfect waxed jacket and you can go invisible if needed. Sounds like a good deal to me.
