Bags can be pretty difficult for anyone to decide on. You don’t want to look like you’re selling dubious charity direct debits in the town centre by wearing one of those cross body messenger things. You don’t want to look like a child by wearing a backpack to work and you probably won’t get everything you need for a day out in the free tote bag that you got from that bakery in Hebden Bridge. You also don’t want to look like a fishing enthusiast with one of those trout bags when going into an important meeting.
So we decided to come up with something that mixed all the best parts of a bag and none of the weird stuff… welcome to the Laneside tote. We started by looking at shapes that were elegant, but no too try-hard and that led us to this modified tote that you see before your eyes. There are two front pockets with a press stud which give you easy access to things that you need regularly with the added security of brass stud to keep things safely stowed. At the back is a poppered folder/laptop holder, I know most laptops probably won’t fit in there, but if you are in the office, in a rush and the main compartment is overloaded, you can definitely fit it in there temporarily.
Inside the bag is a large main compartment with two sausage roll holders at each end, but if you want to put phones/keys/chargers in there, we will forgive you. The bag is then secured with a leather strap referencing those ace leather pieces are used on old-fashioned UK/US hunting bags. The bag itself is made from a soft, sturdy and rugged bonded cotton canvas which is the best fabric from which to make bags like this. Two layers of canvas are bonded together to rubber to create an almost entirely waterproof fabric which is will last for years. There is leather trim throughout the bag to give it a premium feel and to reinforce the main stress points of the bag. Even when the handles are secured to the bag, they are reinforced with leather, a feature we love.
The webbing used throughout the bag is premium-grade cotton which will age and wear to perfection that more that you use it. This bag comes in the ‘Zamorano’ colour which is black on the outer and navy blue on the inner, giving a knowing nod to my favourite Chilean. It is then finished with black leather and canvas for an extra luxurious appearance. The cotton is so soft and sturdy, you will wonder how on earth we managed to do it. Get ready for people to ask you where you got your bag from and I will see you in 20 years when you want the other colour.
