A few years ago we released our waffle knit cardigans. They were an exact replica of the one that my mum wore during the ’60s that she borrowed from her grandfather to complete the look of the area which included tartan shirts, skirts and Dr. Martens. The soundtrack was Ska and soul and there are many images of her wearing this cardigan with her friends and looking amazing. After a bit of research it turned out that waffle knit cardigans were the item of clothing to be wearing during this period and it continued as a cult British item for many years. From mods, to rockers, the indie bands of the 80s and casuals of the 80s and 90s all had a period of wearing waffle knit cardigans.
We got in touch with one of our suppliers and it turns out that they made the originals for many independent menswear shops in the 1960s. So they dusted off the patterns and got to knitting and we couldn’t be happier with the results. They are an exact replica of what was worn during the period and feature the leather football buttons (or cracked minstrel if you are a chocolate fan), the two front pockets, the thick placket around the neck and down the front and a louche, slightly oversized fit.
The first release of these cardigans went all over the world from Chile to Australia and everywhere in between, some even made it to East Lancashire. We did four releases of them and thought that was that. However, we would get emails almost every week asking us to make more and seeing as we are in our 10th year, we thought now would be the time to bring them back. So here they are for the final time (or until we get to 20 years old) and available to pre-order. They will take 6-8 weeks to manufacture in the same factory as the originals and we will aim to start sending them the week commencing 4th November 2024. It is a bit of a wait, but seeing as some people have been waiting 40 years for them, a little bit longer isn’t much of an issue.
So go on and get involved!
