You know when you just so happen to be in the right place at the right time? Well, I was in Napoli talking about coffee to my mate Inés (who just so happens to own the Atelier Inés B&B that you should stay at if you ever visit the greatest city on Earth) and she said that the very, very best coffee in the city was being made by a bloke called Vincenzo who was making it out of a tiny shop on the outskirts of the Spanish Quarters. She told me about how he selects the most in-season beans and prepares them to perfection in his micro-roastery which is just down the road. So when someone makes that kind of recommendation you have to go and check it out… And I am very glad that we did!
Vincenzo is a man that takes coffee very seriously, his tiny bar is dedicated to information about the varieties of beans and blends that he creates. He goes to great lengths to find the very best raw ingredients so that those who pop into the bar get the best taste experience possible. In short, Vincenzo has forgotten more than I know about coffee, so when we say that he knows his stuff… he really does. I visited, had an espresso, fell in love and the decided that we needed to make our own blend with him. Thankfully he agreed and came up with what I believe is the perfect Neapolitan espresso, which is what we call the ‘Classico’ blend.
This coffee is chocolately, rich, aromatic, low in acidity and makes you want to drink about five espressos per day, but please don’t do that (unless you are an experienced Neapolitan coffee drinker – Loris and Gaetano I am looking at you!). This is about as close as you can get to the perfect Neapolitan espresso without hopping on your scooter and visiting Vincenzo in person. The coffee is available in beans and ground for espresso machine/moka pot. The bags are finished with our custom artwork showing a Lancastrian chap and Neapolitan fella shaking hands over what is the best coffee available on the internet… but I am slightly biased. So go on, treat yourself to the best, you deserve it.
