I was stood around a table in a freezing shed on the outskirts of Leicester with Roy last year and we got to chatting about sweatshirts. I was lamenting the fact that I couldn’t find a place to make me a zipped sweatshirt that looked like something a semi-pro ‘I could’ve made it, if I hadn’t hurt my knee’ footballer would’ve worn in the ’70s, with cigarette in hand, all whilst drinking a pint of mild. Weirdly, Roy knew exactly what that meant and then went on to tell me that he and Helen could make some for us… so they did just that.

The first thing to mention about these lovely sweatshirts is that the fabric and components all come within an 8 mile radius of Roy’s workshop. The zips, fabric and manufacture are all from the jewel of the East Midlands… Leicester, doesn’t get much lower carbon footprint than that eh?

The fabric is a beautiful mid-weight French terry that has been wonderfully knit for us by Rajen and his team. The fabric is soft, warm and the ideal weight to layer under a light jacket or a nice piece of knitwear for extra warmth. The zips are made by Neil and the gang and have even featured on the BBC, such is their zip-making prowess. The zip is chunky, reassuringly hefty and makes the perfect noise when zipped up.

The sweatshirt comes in a ‘trim’ but by no means slim fit and a slightly shorter body for a slightly more retro/sleeker finish. The collar can look good zipped all the way up to keep your neck nice and toasty or it can be opened to give yourself a bit more of a ’70s flair. There is a ribbed hem, cuffs and the famous TRiCKETT ‘pie-eating’ side panels make a reappearance so that you can have as many pastry-based goods as you can manage.

This particular sweatshirt comes in our very versatile ‘Blackpool Sea’ colour which goes with everything, is a classic staple of any wardrobe and is named after the sea where I lost a pink power ranger, but I will save you that heartbreaking tale for another time.

The tops are expertly put together by Roy and Helen in their shed in a rural village on the outskirts of Leicester. The time and effort that goes into each and every one of these sweatshirts is truly a marvel. As time passes by we are losing more and more of these wonderful makers in the UK, who are able to make complex garments like these and much more besides. This top is a testament to the wonderful people in our domestic clothing trade.

The sweatshirts are finished with a TRiCKETT logo label to the bottom left hem and a completely over-the-top TRiCKETT Sportswear logo to the inside neck, drawn by our dear pal Peter O’Toole. It displays many of the sporting ways to wear this sweatshirt if you want to… or you can just wear it to feed the ducks and tell people not to throw frozen bread for them because they can’t digest it… Your call.

So go on, make me, Roy, Helen, Rajen and Neil smile and treat yourself to a bit of East Midlands magic.
