NORI Brick

What do the Hacienda, Sellafield, the Empire State Building, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Blackpool Tower and Battersea Power station all have in common? As you have probably guessed from the image, yes, they all feature Accrington NORI bricks in their foundations or actual construction.

The NORI brick is generally regarded as the toughest brick ever manufactured. The tale goes that although the bricks were intended to be called ‘IRON’ bricks because of their strength, when the moulds were made for the bricks, the letters were placed into the cast the wrong way, spelling ‘NORI’. The name stuck and the bricks have been known as ‘NORI bricks’ ever since. Being an Accrington lad, I am proud of our local history and heritage. Without getting too deep, I think these bricks represent who we are as people – strong, resilient, hardworking. Industry and Prudence Conquer.

Recently, we ran into a friend who was looking to sell some lovely NORIs after taking down an old garden shed. These antique bricks are pretty hard to come by and could certainly tell a story! As we think they are such beautiful objects, we thought we should offer them up to be purchased individually. By no means are the bricks worth loads of money, but they are an excellent piece of Accrington history and a wonderful display item. Be it a door stop, book end, ornament on a shelf, there are plenty of ways to show them off. The retail price is pretty much all postage, but by crikey they will look nice on your sideboard.
