Ever gone on holiday to France and been at a market wondering where all the old people get those ace netted bags from that they shove all their fruit and veg in and then manage to strategically shove a baguette in them too? Well wonder no more, they are Filt shopping bags and they have been popular in France for over 100 years.
Filt started making cotton fishing nets in the middle of the 19th century and eventually started making these bags in the late 1940s for people to use at local markets and for the sellers to transport their goods. They come in hundreds of different colours and combinations and are still as popular now as they were in the middle of the 20th century. The handles and ribbing are very tightly knitted so as to be nice and reinforced, with the main part of the bag being nice and loosely knit for maximum storage and stretch.
I got these beauties into stock as they have long handles and because they are made from cotton netting they just seem to stretch and stretch and stretch. I got a whole week’s worth of fruit and veg in here, with plenty of space for more bread and Charlie Bigham’s Chicken Tikka Masala curries. This particular bag comes in the French tricolore of blue, white and red and makes you look as if you know about wine and cheese, when in actual fact all you do is buy Babybels and get whatever wine is on offer… we won’t tell anyone though.
My favourite thing about the bag is that each bag has the name of the person who made it for you on the label, a needless detail, but one that I like very much. Perfect for storing at the bottom of a bag or in your car for when you need some emergency storage or the perfect partner for visiting a brocante or produce market in the south of France. I am jealous of you already.
