Neapolitans always end up doing things differently to the rest of Italy and here is a prime example! The flip coffee maker was first introduced to Naples in the early 1800’s by the French, it was used as a way to make a stronger coffee than brewing it in the traditional way. The original versions were made from copper, but coffee-loving Neapolitans made their versions from cheaper tin and later aluminium so that everyone could enjoy them. They also renamed them the Cuccuma pot. The Moka pot would later go on to replace these pots in some homes, but these are still used to this day.
Rather than using boiling water and pressure like modern espresso makers, the flip pot uses gravity and patience to create the espresso. There is a video below on how to use your pot – it is fun for the whole family, just be careful when using it! Ours are made in Italy from aluminium and feature hardened plastic handles to prevent burning yourself when flipping the pot. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, our pots feature the TRiCKETT logo and ‘Forza Napoli!’ lasered on the cuccuma so that you can think of Bella Napoli whilst having your morning coffee.
If you do happen to be in Napoli and want to see how a master uses their pot, go and have a word with Giuseppe at Don Cafe. He will show you how best to use your cuccuma.
I mean, what more could you ask for from us? It is weird, Napoli-related, coffee and it has our logo on? Go and get involved.
Please read the instructions carefully and use the pot with caution. TRiCKETT doesn’t accept any responsibility for you being a silly billy with the boiling water in the chamber.
