The Defender coat is designed specifically to protect you in the harsh British winter weather. Most of the coats and jackets you see in shops and online are mass-produced and try to cover as many different climates as possible. As we all know, many of these coats and jackets just don’t cut it when you’ve been soaked on a dog walk in a torrential downpour and it’s blowing a gale.
With the Defender, we wanted to create something which could battle against the cold, rain, drizzle, sleet, snow and frost that is typical of a British winter. There is a membrane inside the coat which is waterproof and heat-reflective in order to keep you warm and dry, like an outerwear version of your favourite cosy pub.
The outer part of the Defender coat is British woven cashmere (15% cashmere, 85% wool). Yes, you read that correctly, it is a cashmere coat that is soft and cosy with plenty of heat retention. The fabric is made in Hawick from yarns which are made in Huddersfield. Talk about using the best that we could! To offer a bit of contrast, the jacket has brown wool detailing which is, again, made in Hawick. This has a slightly rougher handle as it is in the places that need a bit of reinforcement.
The jacket is entirely quilt-lined for extra cosiness and lined in a beautiful navy and blue stripe. There is a ‘drip strip’ on the inside hem of the coat which prevents any water sticking to the inside of your coat. There is also one zipped pocket on the inside of the coat for extra-secure storage. The sleeve-ends are lined in leather and have a ribbed cuff at the end – this is what is commonly known as a ‘storm cuff’ in that it is waterproof and it ensures that water can’t encroach through flappy sleeves.
Now let us talk about pockets. The Defender has two hand- warmer pockets which are half lined in fleece fabric (made in Colne) for extra warmth on those horrible, wet days. There are also two bellows pockets at the bottom. The coat references shoot coats from many years ago and as a result we thought it would be cool to have the original pocket flap holders that those coats had. This was originally to give you easy access to your shotgun cartridges, but, as we’re lovers not fighters here at TRiCKETT, we have lined our pockets in waterproof nylon for you to pop your pie and snacks inside instead. The waterproof nylon means that any spillages can be wiped out and the flap holders ensure easy access. Good eh?
This particular coat is made in collaboration with my dear friend Upender who runs Beaver of Bolton (you can watch a video about him below). This is the end product of months of design tweaks and seeing how best we could support as many different British companies as possible. There are over 100 British jobs associated with the manufacture of this piece and many more in supply chains outside. The coat represents the very pinnacle of what we can make in this country and will be a piece to last a lifetime.
Look great, support British jobs and defeat winter… forever. Sounds good to me.
