I will be quite honest, I was very close to not commenting on Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement as manager of Manchester United. I know that everyone and their dog has been commenting on the events and when even ESPN Sports Center in the USA had an editorial piece on his career I became even less likely.
However, I do feel it would be wrong not to comment on someone who is probably the best football manager this country and maybe the world has even seen. Aside from myself taking Bristol City to a 5 trophy season on football manager… I am not sure that counts though.
I have spent quite a lot of my life disliking Sir. Alex and Manchester United, mostly out of jealously, but it seems like a new, scary world out there without him. For the whole time I have been paying attention to football, he has been the manager of Manchester United and given me a reason to watch football just on the off chance he and his team may be beaten. Saturday afternoons of results without seeing his red cheeks and machine-like chewing action seem like something that would never happen. Alas here we are.
We do like winners here at TRiCKETT and we admire people that make sporting history. So good luck Sir. Alex, you have angered me, excited me and helped me realise why I love football. Just don’t expect me to give you my seat on the bus or help you walk across the road anytime soon.
