I am far from a Blackburn Rovers fan. I would go so far as to say I have a dislike for them, (raised by Burnley fans, even though I am a Stanley man myself) however tonight they will be on the brink of relegation. You would think that I would be dancing in my Sanders socks at the thought of Rovers being relegated to play the Clarets next season, however you’d be wrong.
Last time they were here in 1999 they were an extremely average team, however at least they had some fight in them and their relegation was at least a battle. This season a club that has so much heritage and history has been made a laughing stock. The only reason I feel strongly about this is that this same thing could happen to any of our clubs. The gold rush in the British game is still alive and well. The more of our communities that we give away to multimillionaires, who know nothing about the game or region they are buying into, the further we will get from what we love. That sense of identity and community that makes football the great sport it is. Sadly with Rovers potentially going into the Championship next season, we must all face the sombre fact that football isn’t what it was.
We have given too much away and we can’t get it back.
