Whatever your opinion is on it, baselayers seem to be a modern phenomenon and one that sport seems unable to shake off. I imagine that if I told most of you that baseball has been using undergarments in order to improve performance since the late 19th Century, most of you wouldn’t care, however it is true.
Jerseys used to be made out of water retaining, heavy and generally itchy wool that when worn against the skin would cause irritation and meant that you wouldn’t be able to keep your eye on the opponents base steal. The choice was simple have angry nipples and fans or find a solution and win more games.
It was decided that cotton undershirts that were made in three qurater sleeves (so that your wrists were free for slapping some leather into the stands or throwing that all important splitter) would be the answer as they didn’t hold that much water, were lighter and didn’t irritate. As you can see on the picture Marilyn liked the shirts so much she even posed with a player wearing one!
So as a tribute to these pioneers we will be releasing the Mays shirt which is made from heavyweight jersey so as to keep you warm and so it will last longer. We can also guarantee* that the next Marilyn Monroe will take you by the hand and pose with you due to the excellence of your sartorial choices.
